Algerian Office (AMO)
The National Office of Legal Metrology, established by Decree No. 86-250 of September 30, 1986, creating the National Office of Legal Metrology (ONML), constitutes the national metrology entity provided for under Article 6 of Law No. 17-09 of 28 Joumada El Thania 1438, corresponding to March 27, 2017, relating to the National Metrology System.
The designation “National Office of Legal Metrology” was changed to “Algerian Metrology Office” (AMO) by Executive Decree No. 24-276 of 8 Safar 1446, corresponding to August 13, 2024, which defines its missions, organization, and operation. The AMO is a public administrative institution that succeeds the National Office of Legal Metrology (ONML).
The Office implements the national policy for the development of metrology in its five areas: metrology development, fundamental (scientific) metrology, legal metrology, industrial metrology, and cooperation, awareness-raising, and training. It also ensures the preservation of the public guarantee of measuring instruments and systems, as well as the protection of the national economy both domestically and in international trade.

The Algerian Metrology Office (AMO) is headed by a Director General and supported by a Steering Council and a National Metrology Council. It is assisted by a Secretary General, four (04) technical departments, and one administrative department, as well as six (06) regional branches and fifty-eight (58) provincial branches.
To date, the AMO has a workforce of 603 civil servants out of a theoretical staffing level of 709, with technical personnel representing 70% of the total workforce.
